Name.com Review: Renewal Prices and Who It Suits

Name.com's own price list shows .com at $12.99 and $17.99 without saying which is the renewal. Both are above the cheapest renewals we checked the same day.

October 30, 2026 · 8 min read · Last checked: October 30, 2026

Name.com is not a low-cost renewal registrar. Its pricing page, checked October 30, 2026, shows two prices for .com: $12.99 and $17.99. It does not label which is the first year and which is the renewal. Both figures are higher than the .com renewals Spaceship ($9.98), Dynadot ($10.88) and Porkbun ($11.08) listed that day.

What Name.com does document is 24/7 live-agent chat, a transfer offer that bundles WHOIS privacy and SSL, and a long track record as an Identity Digital company. This review covers what its pages say, what they leave out, and who that combination fits. We have not used Name.com; everything below comes from its published pages.

Key takeaways

  • Name.com's pricing page lists .com at $12.99 and $17.99, .net at $16.49 and $19.99, and .io at $53.99 and $79.99, without labeling which is the renewal. Checked Oct 30, 2026.
  • On .com, .net and .io, both Name.com figures were higher than the listed renewals at Porkbun, Spaceship and Dynadot.
  • Name.com's transfer page says transfers include a free renewal, WHOIS privacy and an SSL certificate. New customers get 15% off up to 10 transfers with code NEWHOME.
  • Its glossary lists a service fee of up to $20 to renew shortly after expiry and a $120 fee to recover a domain from redemption.
  • Name.com lists live-agent chat and support tickets as available 24/7. It is part of Identity Digital and was founded in 2003 in Denver.

What Name.com publishes about price

A renewal review starts with the renewal price. Name.com makes that harder to pin down than most registrars.

Its pricing page shows a short "Featured Domains" list with two figures per extension. Its .com, .net and .io product pages show Registration, Renewal and Transfer labels, but in the versions we could load, no dollar amounts appeared next to them. Its full extension list did not load either.

.com$12.99 and $17.99None
.net$16.49 and $19.99None
.org$9.99 and $19.99None
.io$53.99 and $79.99None

Checked Oct 30, 2026. Name.com notes these are for standard domains; names marked Premium may cost more. A common layout is a sale price beside a regular price, but Name.com's page does not say so, so we do not assume it.

The practical takeaway: before you buy, open the cart and look for the renewal line. If you already hold domains there, the renewal center in your account shows the price you will actually pay.

Other published fees

  • Advanced Security: listed at $0.00 on the pricing page.
  • Domain restoration: the pricing page says it varies by TLD and to contact support.
  • Bulk pricing: available by contacting Name.com's account services team.

How those prices compare with the cheapest renewals

We set Name.com's figures beside the one-year renewal prices three low-cost registrars listed on their own pages the same day.

Name.com's listed figures vs. other registrars' renewal prices
TLDName.com (unlabeled)Porkbun renewalSpaceship renewalDynadot renewal
.com$12.99 / $17.99$11.08$9.98$10.88
.net$16.49 / $19.99$12.52$11.20$12.52

.io$53.99 / $79.99$51.80Page did not load$53.50

All prices checked Oct 30, 2026 on each registrar's own pages. Porkbun says its prices include ICANN fees; Spaceship says an ICANN fee applies at purchase; Dynadot notes prices may vary with exchange rates.

What the comparison shows

For .com, .net and .io, both of Name.com's figures are higher than every competitor renewal in the table. That holds whichever figure turns out to be the renewal.

For .org, the answer depends on the label. Name.com's $9.99 is below the others, while its $19.99 is well above them. Check the cart before deciding.

What the gap adds up to

As simple arithmetic at today's prices: ten years of .com at $12.99 is $129.90, and at $17.99 it is $179.90. Ten years at Spaceship's $9.98 is $99.80. Prices change, so treat this as an illustration of scale, not a forecast.

That pattern of small yearly gaps compounding is the core of our domain renewal trap analysis.

The .com cost floor after November 1

Every registrar pays the same wholesale price for .com. Verisign raised its registry fee from $10.26 to $10.97 effective November 1, 2026. ICANN charges registrars $0.20 per transaction-year on top. The combined cost is $11.17 a year.

Against that floor, Name.com's lower .com figure is $1.82 above cost and its higher figure is $6.82 above cost. Spaceship, Dynadot and Porkbun all listed renewals below $11.17 on October 30, which means those prices may rise once the increase passes through.

Cloudflare says it sells at the registry and ICANN price with no markup, so its .com renewal tracks the $11.17 floor. Even after the low-cost registrars adjust, a renewal near $11.17 remains available.

A useful benchmark

For any .com renewal quote, subtract $11.17. What is left is the registrar's margin. That margin is what you can shop away by switching registrars.

Transferring in: what Name.com includes

Name.com's transfer page is where its offer is clearest. It says every domain transfer includes a free domain renewal, Domain Safe with WHOIS privacy protection, and an SSL certificate.

The same page offers new customers 15% off domain transfers with the code NEWHOME, valid on up to 10 transfers. It also warns that premium domains may have higher transfer and renewal prices.

The transfer table on that page showed a dash in place of a price for .com and other extensions when we loaded it, so we cannot quote a transfer price.

Things to confirm before transferring in

  1. The renewal price after the included year. Cloudflare and Porkbun also say most transfers include a year. The renewal after that is what you will keep paying.
  2. Privacy on non-transferred names. The transfer page lists free WHOIS privacy for transfers. We could not confirm from the pages we opened whether it is free on new registrations.
  3. The 60-day rule. ICANN's policy means you cannot move the domain again for 60 days after the transfer lands.

For the steps at both the old and new registrar, see our domain transfer guide.

Expiry, late renewal and redemption fees

Late-renewal fees matter as much as the sticker price. Name.com's domain glossary spells out several.

Post-expiry stages, per Name.com's glossary
StageWhat Name.com saysCost
Shortly after expiryA very short period when you can still renewService fee of up to $20.00, plus renewal
RedemptionBegins if not renewed roughly 15 to 30 days after expiration$120.00 to recover ($150.00 for .CN)
Renewal termExtends expiration by one to nine additional yearsRenewal price per year

From Name.com's glossary, checked Oct 30, 2026. Its pricing page separately says restoration fees vary by TLD and to contact support.

The glossary calls the $120 a fee levied by the central registry. Either way, it is far more than a year of renewal, so the cheapest protection is auto-renew with a working card. The glossary confirms you can set some or all domains to renew automatically.

Company, support and track record

Name.com's About page says it was founded in 2003, is based in Denver, Colorado, and is part of Identity Digital. It is an ICANN-accredited registrar.

Its help center lists live-agent chat as available 24/7, and support tickets as available "anytime." The help center also covers DNS records, nameserver changes, MX setup for email, and email forwarding on Name.com email accounts.

Of the low-cost registrars we compared, Porkbun lists phone and chat support from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific daily, and Spaceship's documented first line is an AI assistant that hands off to live chat. Neither of those documents 24/7 live-agent chat on the pages we opened, so on paper this is where Name.com stands out.

Who Name.com suits

A reasonable fit if

  • You value round-the-clock access to a live person over the lowest possible price.
  • You are transferring in and want privacy and an SSL certificate bundled, and you have checked the year-two price in the cart.
  • You already hold names there and the renewal-center price is close to the $11.17 .com floor for your situation.

Look elsewhere if

  • Renewal cost is your main criterion. On .com, .net and .io, other registrars listed lower renewals the same day.
  • You want every price labeled up front. Name.com's public pages did not show which figure is the renewal.
  • You hold many names. Small yearly gaps grow with portfolio size, and bulk pricing requires contacting Name.com.

If you are leaning toward a lower-cost registrar, our Cloudflare vs Porkbun comparison covers two of the options in the table above.
