NAMING GUIDE

How to Choose a Domain Name

10 rules for picking a domain name you won't regret. Plus common mistakes to avoid.

The 10 Rules

1

Keep It Short

Aim for 6-14 characters. Shorter = easier to type, remember, and fit on business cards.

2

Make It Easy to Spell

If you say it out loud, can people spell it correctly? Avoid homophones (their/there), unusual spellings, or made-up words.

3

Avoid Hyphens and Numbers

"best-widgets-4-u.com" looks spammy and is hard to communicate verbally. Stick to letters only.

4

Get .com If Possible

It's the most trusted and memorable. If unavailable, .io or .co are acceptable alternatives for tech companies.

5

Make It Brandable

Generic names (bestshoes.com) are forgettable. Unique names (zappos.com) become brands. Create something distinctive.

6

Check Social Media Availability

Before committing, check if @yourname is available on Twitter, Instagram, etc. Consistency matters.

7

Avoid Trademark Issues

Don't use brand names or variations. "ApplePhoneRepairs.com" will get you a legal letter.

8

Think Long-Term

Will this name still work if you expand? "ChicagoPlumber.com" limits you. "ReliablePlumbing.com" scales.

9

Say It Out Loud

The "radio test" — can you say it clearly on a podcast? Avoid domains that sound confusing verbally.

10

Act Fast

Good domains get taken. If you find one you love and it's available, buy it now. $10/year is nothing compared to losing your perfect name.
