gTLD vs ccTLD Explained

Understanding the difference between generic and country-code domain extensions—and how to choose the right one.

What Are gTLDs and ccTLDs?

gTLD (Generic Top-Level Domain)

Generic extensions not tied to any country. Originally 7, now over 1,200.

Examples: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .app, .io, .xyz

ccTLD (Country-Code Top-Level Domain)

Two-letter codes assigned to countries/territories. About 250 exist.

Examples: .uk, .de, .fr, .ca, .au, .jp, .io, .ai

Types of gTLDs

Type Examples Notes
Legacy gTLDs .com, .net, .org Original 1980s TLDs, most trusted
Sponsored gTLDs .edu, .gov, .mil Restricted to specific communities
New gTLDs (2012+) .app, .dev, .shop 1,200+ new extensions
Brand gTLDs .google, .apple, .amazon Company-owned, not public

Popular ccTLDs Used Globally

Some country codes have become popular for non-geographic uses:

ccTLD Country Used For
.io British Indian Ocean Territory Tech startups (input/output)
.ai Anguilla AI/ML companies
.co Colombia "Company" alternative
.tv Tuvalu Video/streaming
.fm Micronesia Podcasts/radio
.me Montenegro Personal sites
.gg Guernsey Gaming ("good game")

SEO Implications

Google's Approach

  • gTLDs: Treated as generic/global. No inherent geographic signal.
  • True ccTLDs: Strong signal for that country (.de for Germany, .fr for France)
  • "Generic" ccTLDs: .io, .co, .tv, .me are treated as generic by Google

⚠️ International Targeting

If you use a true ccTLD (like .de), Google will primarily show your site to users in that country. Use Search Console to adjust international targeting if needed.

When to Use Each Type

Choose gTLD (.com, .net, etc.)

  • ✓ Global audience
  • ✓ Maximum brand recognition
  • ✓ No geographic restrictions
  • ✓ Resale value (especially .com)

Choose ccTLD (.de, .uk, etc.)

  • ✓ Local business targeting one country
  • ✓ Trust signal for local customers
  • ✓ Sometimes better availability
  • ✓ Legal requirements (some industries)
