Cloudflare vs Spaceship 2026: At-Cost vs Below-Cost Pricing

May 2026 · 6 min read

⚡ Quick Verdict

Spaceship is $3.40 cheaper over 5 years ($48.80 vs $52.20). Cloudflare has better long-term pricing transparency (contractual at-cost guarantee) and includes enterprise-grade DNS/DDoS protection. Choose Spaceship for lowest price today; choose Cloudflare for predictability and developer tools.

Two Different Pricing Models

Cloudflare's model: Charge exactly the wholesale price, zero markup, forever. When Verisign raises the wholesale to $10.97 in November, Cloudflare will charge exactly $10.97. This is a contractual commitment — it's in their terms of service.

Spaceship's model: Price below wholesale as a loss leader. At $9.98/year for .com renewals, they're losing $0.46 per domain per year at the current $10.44 wholesale. This is subsidized by parent company Namecheap, who uses Spaceship to acquire customers that may eventually buy Namecheap's higher-margin hosting and email services.

The Sustainability Question

Cloudflare's pricing is guaranteed and sustainable — they make money on their CDN, security, and Workers products, not on domain registration. Domains are an on-ramp to their ecosystem.

Spaceship's below-cost pricing is a marketing expense for Namecheap. It works as long as Namecheap decides the customer acquisition value justifies the subsidy. If Namecheap changes strategy, Spaceship's prices could jump overnight to match or exceed Cloudflare's. There's no contractual guarantee of below-cost pricing.

That said, Spaceship has maintained this pricing since launch in 2023, and the strategy appears to be working — they're one of the fastest-growing registrars in the industry. There's no imminent sign of a price change.

Choose Cloudflare If...

You're a developer who values the technical stack: fastest DNS in the world, built-in DDoS protection, free CDN, email routing, and Workers for edge computing. You also want absolute pricing certainty — you'll never wonder whether your registrar is going to surprise you with a price increase beyond the Verisign wholesale change. The trade-off is you must use Cloudflare's nameservers.

Choose Spaceship If...

You want the lowest possible price today and don't need enterprise DNS/CDN features. The interface is cleaner and more approachable than Cloudflare's dashboard. You can use any nameservers you want. And Sedo MLS Fast Transfer support makes it solid for domain investors too.

💡 Our Take

Both are excellent. For pure domain registration with no frills, Spaceship saves you $3.40 per domain over 5 years. For technical users who want best-in-class DNS and security bundled with their registrar, Cloudflare is hard to beat at any price. We earn affiliate commissions on Spaceship and $0 on Cloudflare — we recommend both.
